What is Botox?

Many factors can cause wrinkles and facial lines. Reduction of collagen, sun exposure, and environmental factors are just some of the ways our skin can appear to change throughout the years. Repeated facial movements can cause facial lines and wrinkles. Repetitive squinting, frowning, furrowing, and raising our eyebrows can cause folds and creases to appear (and deepen) over time.

The appearance of fine lines and wrinkles is unavoidable as we age. Botox is a purified protein that relaxes muscle movement, combats fine lines and wrinkles, and restores skin’s youthful appearance. Using strategically placed injections, worry lines, crow’s feet, and brow lines will become smooth and minimized.

Derived from the C. botulinum bacteria, the active Botox ingredient in Botox occurs naturally in nature. When cell populations of C. botulinum are allowed to multiply, they produce a toxin called Botulinum.

Botox manufacturers use a tiny amount of the Botulinum toxin to create the product. Since the toxin concentration is so low, Botox is safe when used correctly in a therapeutic manner.

Over 4700 peer-reviewed articles and sixteen years of published research have confirmed that Botox is a safe and effective treatment to reduce the appearance of wrinkles in most people.

You’ve tested for antibodies to Botulinum toxin type A, and they are present (Botox treatments will be ineffective in this case)

You have a neuromuscular disease like multiple sclerosis

You experience weakness or paralysis of particular facial muscles

You have drooping eyelids (ptosis) or have experienced ptosis after Botox injections

You have deep facial scars or very uneven facial features

You have current skin issues near the desired injection site

Side Effects

Side effects from cosmetic Botox are uncommon but possible. Some of these side effects include:

Numbness

Headache

Upset stomach

Dry mouth

Eye redness

Mild pain, bruising, or swelling around the site of injection

Temporary paralysis or weakness in muscles near the injection site

Ptosis

Worsening of neuromuscular disorders

Genetic factors may play a role in the instance and severity of side effects.

How Botox works

Botox works to reduce facial wrinkles by injecting a small amount of the Botulinum toxin diluted with saline into the area you’d like to treat.

First, your doctor may numb the area with an anesthetic cream. Next, they will inject Botox into your facial muscles in the desired location. After the injection, the medication blocks specific nerves from firing and prevents certain muscles from contracting. As these muscles relax, the appearance of wrinkles lessens.

Your doctor may ask you to remain upright for a few hours after your Botox injection. Doing this can help reduce the instance of side effects. They may also recommend that you refrain from exercise for the first day or two after your treatment. Your doctor may recommend ointment or eye drops to soothe sensitive skin and eyes.

Botox Injections FAQ

What is a botox lip flip?

The Lip Flip is a procedure where Botox is injected right above the top of the lip. The Lip Flip does not add volume to your lips, so it is different from your other fillers, but it does relax your lip allowing it to curl out creating a fuller-looking lip.

What is the difference between Xeomin and Botox?

Botox and Xeomin both use a neurotoxin called botulinum. However, Botox uses added proteins in its injections, whereas Xeomin is closer to the pure neurotoxin.

What is the difference between Dysport and botox?

Dysport is also a type of botulinum neurotoxin, the biggest difference between Botox and Dysport is in how they are made. Botox is less diluted than Dysport, so it takes longer to spread. Botox is also able to be used to treat many different types of wrinkles, whereas Dysport is typically used for correcting frown lines.

How long does the Botox office visit take?

The procedure takes about thirty minutes. Within one to three days, the Botulinum toxin begins to take effect, though sometimes results take a little extra time to appear or reach maximum impact.

Can you do botox while breastfeeding?

While there is insufficient data to determine if Botox transfers through breast milk, it’s improbable that it would harm your baby. However, to reduce any chance of passing medication to your baby, we recommend breastfeeding or pumping before your injections, then waiting a few hours after your procedure to feed or pump again. “Pumping and dumping” is likely unnecessary.

How long does Botox treatment last?

Botox treatments last a different amount of time depending on how many units you used, and if you are a first-time user or an experienced user. However, Botox is expected to last from 3-6 months based on how your body metabolizes it.
