Breast Augmentation – FAQs

What are the risks of breast augmentation?

As with any surgery or cosmetic procedure, breast augmentation does come with certain risks. Implant displacement, deflation (saline), rupture (silicone, gummy, teardrop), and capsular contracture are all a possibility, although they are rare. More serious complications are also infrequent but can include poor reactions to anesthesia or pain medicines, infection, or excessive bleeding. At Revivology, we take every precaution to ensure that our patients receive the best care available and experience a positive outcome.

How long will my recovery be after my breast augmentation?

Typically, patients are able to return to normal activities within 7-10 days of their breast augmentation, and rarely need more than one week off work. If you have small children or have a job that requires heavy lifting, we recommend that you have extra help on hand for the first week after surgery. After that time, you may slowly introduce more strenuous activities as any soreness or discomfort decreases.

When can I start to exercise again after breast augmentation?

After your initial 7-10 days of recovery, you may start walking briskly and slowly work your way up to more demanding aerobic activity. We recommend waiting at least two weeks before any type of lifting or high impact activities. A good rule of thumb would be: if it is painful or causes discomfort concerning your implants, stop and let yourself recover for a few more days before trying again.

How much pain should I expect after my breast augmentation?

During your breast augmentation you will feel little to no pain. Once you enter the recovery area any pain that you experience can be easily treated with medications. The greatest discomfort will last between 24 and 48 hours after your procedure. Dr. Kelly will prescribe a pain management remedy to ensure maximum comfort during that time. After the first few days of recovery, any pain and discomfort will begin to fade and you will have less need for medications.

How often will I need to replace my implants?

Fortunately, breast implants are not like cars. You do not need to replace them after a certain number of years (miles). As long as you are not experiencing any difficulty with your implants such as implant rupture or capsular contracture, you should never need to replace them. Be sure to ask Dr. Kelly about any specific warranty that may come with the implants you choose.

How will I know what size of implants I need?

During your free 45-minute consultation with Dr. Kelly, you will “try on” a variety of different implant sizes. At this time he will be able to predict with incredible accuracy how you will look after your breast augmentation. This is often described as the “fun” part of the appointment, as you can see yourself with many different options.

Will I be under anesthesia for my breast augmentation?

When you meet with Dr. Kelly you will discuss your options for anesthesia options based on your specific needs and comfort preferences. You will have several choices and you may rest assured that every method of anesthetic comes with maximum comfort and pain management. We want you to have the best experience possible and be comfortable, confident, and completely at ease during your breast augmentation.

What are the different types of implants?

At Revivology, we offer four different types of implants: saline, silicone, teardrop, and gummy. Each type of implant comes in a large variety of sizes and profiles to ensure that each client receives a perfectly custom fit. You can discuss the benefits of each variety of implant and which will best suit you with Dr. Kelly in detail.

Will my breast and nipple sensitivity be affected by my implants?

Sensitivity after surgery varies greatly from person to person. It may increase, decrease, or stay the same. Generally, any decreased sensation you experience in your breasts or nipples will return to normal within 6-12 months after surgery. In extremely rare cases some sensitivity may not completely return. Most patients regain all normal sensation within the 6-12 month timeframe.

Am I a candidate for breast augmentation surgery in Utah?

Women with smaller breasts, breasts that are unequal in size or shape, breasts that are sagging due to age, or breasts that are smaller or sagging after pregnancy and breast feeding may all benefit from a breast augmentation. Some patients who have excessive sagging skin due to great weight loss or any of the reasons listed above may be candidates for a breast lift in addition to a breast augmentation. If you are a candidate for a breast lift procedure, Dr. Kelly will discuss that with you during your consultation.
